1. Factory or trading company?
Three questions separate them: which machines do you run, which processes are done in-house, and can we visit? A factory answers with equipment (Heidelberg offset, 7+1 UV, 8-colour UV rotary, digital press) and welcomes a visit. A middleman usually answers “we work with many factories”.
2. How much is done in-house
In labels and packaging, most cost and quality risk sits in finishing: lamination, foil stamping, die-cutting, gluing, slitting and rewinding. Ask what is done in your own plant and how outsourced steps are inspected.
3. Small batches
New products and test markets rarely need a container. Digital printing and cutting plotters let you start with a few thousand labels or a few hundred boxes, validate the market, then scale.
4. Sampling and lead time in writing
Get it stated: how many days for a proof, how many for bulk, and what happens if colour is off. “Proof in 24 hours, production about one week” is common — but ask whether that means working days and how peak season affects it.
5. Verifiable credentials
A serious supplier has a business licence you can check in China’s national credit system, ICP and public-security filing numbers on the website, and issues contracts and invoices. For food-contact or cosmetic materials, ask for third-party lab testing with the standard you specify.
- Business licence and whether printing is within its permitted scope
- Filing numbers on the website, verifiable on the government platforms
- A short factory video or an actual visit (buyers in the Pearl River Delta can meet us in Shenzhen / Dongguan)
- Start with a small batch before agreeing on long-term pricing
